A senior Iranian lawmaker has criticized new US legislation to tighten visa-free travel to the United States, saying it violates an agreement reached between Iran and six world powers in mid-July. Iran says it will take action against the US visa waiver bill if Tehran finds the legislation in breach of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the bill has different legal aspects that need to be thoroughly examined. The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to tighten controls on its visa waiver program for citizens from foreign countries. Under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA, visitors of the 38 friendly countries, including Japan, are allowed to travel to the United States and stay for up to 90 days without visas, on condition that they get online approval prior to their arrival.
